24 Acts of Kindness

I thought i'd post the 24 acts of kindness I performed back in October for my birthday. I think this is something i'll definitely continue to do every year from now on. Its amazing how one small, thoughtful gesture can make someone else's day...

1. Opened the door for someone at Starbucks
2. Let two drivers into my lane
3. Left a coffee paid for at Starbucks
4. Donated a bunch of old stuff to the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop
5. Put change in a snack vending machine
6. Donated old books to my local library
7. Participated in a 5k breast cancer walk
8. Picked up litter
9. Left quarters on a washing machine
10. Donated old magazines to a local hospital
11. Was generous with compliments
12. Let someone cut in line at the grocery store
13. Made a $10 donation towards my pledge for the 5k
14. Gave someone a hug
15. Payed toll for the car behind me
16. Made a donation to breast cancer research at the grocery store
17. Bought and mailed my best friend a packet of thank you cards
18. Donated canned food to the Salvation Army
19. Donated old board games to a local hospital
20. Offered to baby-sit for my best friend
21. Spent a few minutes on
22. Wrote a letter to a deployed or wounded member of the military through operation gratitude
23.  Returned a few shopping carts back to the cart rack
24. Spread the goodness - I let anyone who asked what I did for my birthday know about my acts of kindness pledge. I had a coworker tell me I had inspired her to do it for her own birthday. What made it even sweeter was her mom decided to do it for her birthday as well.

Giving of ourselves is infectious :)

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday everyone! I'm linking up with Meet @ the Barre  and Lauren Elizabeth for some Friday Favorites.

Men, Women & Children
I became a huge Ansel Elgort fan after watching The Fault In Our Stars so I was really excited when I found out he was in this movie. I'm personally fascinated by the way we "interact" with people nowadays. Before I go on some long rant on my love hate relationship with technology, I'll just say the movie has no new groundbreaking message. It's about the pitfalls of the internet, specifically social media. It's a little on the depressing side but I still recommend it. And Jennifer Garner did such a great job in it! I love her.

Mushroom Pizza
I recently had this for the first time and I am dying to have it again. It tastes exactly like pizza and its sooo healthy!!! Here is a recipe I found on Pinterest if anyone wants to try it.

Nothing Bunt Cakes
Apparently this franchise is extremely popular in the bay area. Or maybe my family is just obsessed with them. Bottom line, they are AMAZING!!!! Their cakes are always super moist and fluffy and the frosting has just the right amount of sweetness. There is a picture of the two mini bunt cakes my mom got me for my birthday down velvet and chocolate!

Speaking of birthdays...I turned 24 on Monday! I decided to celebrate my birthday this year by doing a Pay It Forward Birthday Pledge. Basically, for however old you're turning you do that many acts of kindness. My last act of kindness is going to be tomorrow. I'm participating in a breast cancer walk. I left fundraising for the last minute (oops)help me reach my goal of $100! if anyone is interested in donating here is the donation link:
I'll be sure and post my 24 acts of kindness. Have a wonderful weekend!

Boyfriend Jeans

I've had two pairs of boyfriend jeans for a few years now and I just recently started wearing them. Just like my military jacket, what took me so long?! They're way easier to pull off than I originally thought, not to mention super comfy. And you can easily dress them up or down. Come to think of it, probably a great staple piece for a day to night look. I styled mine here with a loose fitting off the shoulder shirt, flats & a necklace. I'd love to style them next time with a more form fitting top.

Summer, you're moving too fast. Slow down! Am I right?! I'm linking up with Meghan & Biana  for a weekend recap.

My cousins & I got together Friday night and ended up playing a classy game of Kings Cup with wine. By the way how cute are those coasters?!

I went on a walk Saturday night and got to snap some pics of the gorgeous sunset :)

My favorite part of Sunday is watching this new show called Rising Star. Its a singing competition that started a few weeks ago. I know there's a gazillion singing competitions on t.v. nowadays but what makes this one different is the viewers at home are voting live on a mobile voting app. Overall the concept is cool and I'm already invested so I HAVE to finish the season hahaha. Does anyone else watch this show?! My vote is on Macy Kate.

Hope you all had a good weekend ,

Banana Chocolate Overnight Oatmeal

I love oatmeal but lets be real, sometimes we get sick of eating the same thing over and over again. And warm oatmeal during the summer months doesn't always appeal to me SO I was really excited when my cousin introduced me to overnight oatmeal. What is it you ask?  A mixture of oatmeal, chia seeds, & yogurt with your mix-in of choice. Refrigerate overnight & voila! A cold, nutritious, and convenient breakfast!

Do a quick Pinterest search and you'll find tons of recipes. Most can easily be made gluten and dairy free. The oats I made are based off a recipe from

1/4 cup rolled oats (gluten free oats can be substituted)
1/3 cup skim milk (or almond milk)
1/4 cup low-fat yogurt (optional)
1 teaspoon dried chia seeds
1 tablespoon cocoa powder ( I used dark chocolate)
1 banana

Mix oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, chocolate, and banana. Put lid on container and mix well. Refrigerate overnight & eat chilled.

Do you have any overnight oat recipes?!

Friday Link Up

HAPPY FRIDAY FRIENDS! I'm really excited about today's post because I'm finalllly participating in of my favorite bloggers Friday link up. Seriously if you haven't read Meet @ the Barre go check it out. I look forward to Amanda's posts every week! They're hilarious & she always has great beauty products, fashion, & travel tips to share. Alright, here it goes! Some of my Friday favorites:

Favorite discovery-
Is anyone signed up with the Starbucks rewards program? When you reach green status you're eligible for free refills on brewed/iced coffee, and tea. Considering I’m on an iced coffee kick, it was the perfect time to find this out! Heads up one thing - you technically have to have already been sitting in the store in order to get your free refill but many locations will bend that rule & give you the refill if you walk in with your used cup.

Favorite new food-
Overnight oats. Healthy & delicious. My cousin recently made some for me & I loved them! Banana with dark chocolate overnight oats recipe will be up next week.

Favorite new beauty product- The Clarisonic. It is a tad pricey but with my skin recently deciding to fall off the deep end, I decided to splurge and give it a shot. I'm using the Acne brush head & cleanser. I'm on day two can already say my skin seems to appear less oily. Does anyone else use a Clarisonic??

Favorite song-
"Am I Wrong" by Nico & Vinz. I can't get enough of it!!! The beat, the lyrics...ugh its just so good! I feel like the radio has been playing it just the right amount, like ohh there's that song I like and not omg its already played out amount of times. Am I wrong? Get it? Hahahah. Bad joke

Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend!!!

Military Jacket

Why did it take me so long to buy a military jacket?! For so long I thought they were too trendy for me to pull off but I am so happy with this purchase! It is officially my new favorite thing to wear. I wore this outfit in San Francisco for my moms birthday outing. It was so perfect for the chilly weather. How do you style your military jacket?

Floral Dress

I am about to tell you the most embarrassing thing I've done in awhile. I had gone shopping before a date because of course I had nothing to wear for a casual drinks date, and in the process found the cutest floral dress. I tried it on thinking the V-neck was the front of the dress. My upper body is small framed so 90% of the time I need to get things taken in. The dress definitely fit me a little big on my chest and I just thought no big deal i'm seeing my personal seamstress aka grandma in a few days, she can take it in for me. Well, I get home and try it on for grandma and her, my mom, and aunt start laughing hysterically at me. They all say Ash you have the dress on backwards. The whole time I was just thinking listen guys that is ridiculous, who are you to tell me I don't know how to put on clothes the right way?!Turns out they were right. When I turned the dress around it fit me perfectly. Talk about embarrassing! Be sure to check back next week for a post about my trip back home.

Chilly Weather Outfit

It has been so chilly in Long Beach this week!!! I LOVE it. I snapped pics of an outfit I wore weekssssss ago and this weeks weather inspired me to share it. I'm always cold so i'm a big fan of layering. A trend I picked up on a couple months ago is wearing a sweater over a dress. It is such an easy way to wear spring/summer pieces during winter/fall or vice versa. You can easily take off the sweater if it gets too hot or maybe one of the other pieces. Make it your own!

Open-Faced Turkey Enchilada

I used to find grocery shopping so overwhelming but I've gotten better over the years about making a grocery shopping list & knowing what dishes I can make with certain ingredients. I've been making a lot of things with brown rice tortillas & chicken breasts lately (staple items on my shopping list) so this last shopping trip I decided to change it up and get corn tortillas & ground turkey. After searching around on the internet for a recipe that called for both, I came up with this Open-Faced Turkey Enchilada:

Corn tortillas
Ground turkey (1 tray)
Canned black beans
Frozen mixed veggies
Frozen Bell peppers
Cheddar cheese

Directions: Cook ground turkey in a skillet, season with garlic salt, thyme, Mrs. Dash, cajun seasoing. Add veggies.

Coat baking pan with non stick spray (I used a coconut oil spray from Trader Joe's). Layer bottom of pan with tortillas, add beans & ground turkey.

Bake at 375 F for 30 minutes or so.

5-10 minutes before its done, sprinkle cheese on top and put it back in the oven. The recipes I found call for longer baking times. I wanted to cut down the baking time why I cooked my turkey in a skillet beforehand. This also left me with  plenty of leftover turkey to make other meals with.

Some of the ingredients I used

Let me know if you try out the recipe!!

Happy Wednesday :)

My first fashion post

I am obsessed with fashion bloggers and maybe just a litttttle jealous of them. Their blogs, outfits & pictures are always just so darn perfect! All of the fashion blogs I follow have really begun to inspire my outfits & shopping trips. I look back at old posts all of the time to try and recreate a look I liked or get ideas for an outfit. Most importantly they've inspired me to not be afraid to incorporate a little bit of fashion into my own blog, so thank you for that :)

P.S. Huge thank you to my roommate for trying her best to snap some pictures of me

Oscar Sunday

I love award shows but let's be real, I love the fashion even more. But before we get to the of my favorite moments of the night was Jared Letos' heartfelt acceptance speech that left me teary eyed! And how good looking is he?! I'm not gonna lie, I googled him after hearing his speech and found out he's 41 years old (shocking right?!). I think I found myself a new celebrity crush. My other favorite moment was the epic group selfie Ellen DeGeneres took that apparently momentarily broke twitter because it was retweeted so many times. And the moment we've all been waiting for...below are my top 3 best dressed and top 3 worst dressed of the night:

Best Dressed- Kate Hudson in Versace, Lupita Nyong'o in Prada, Cate Blanchett in Giorgio Armani

Else Jeans

Why are a good pair of jeans so hard to find?!?! And on top of the nightmare that is jean shopping, it doesn't help that I am the pickiest person ever when it comes to jeans. It is just so hard to find a pair that are the right length/wash, hug your curves in the right places, are stretchy but not too stretchy, make your butt look good, and not to mention are an affordable price. I went shopping about a month ago with my mom for some jeans and I stumbled upon a brand I had never heard of at Macy's. The brand is called else. I did a little Google search on them and found this bloggers review on the brand. Turns out else is a fairly new line by the premium denim brand, Joe's Jeans, that is sold exclusively at Macy's.

Else Jeans

I bought two pairs, pictured above, on sale for $35.99 each. Macy's is always having sales (btw all else jeans are on sale right now!!) so be a smart shopper and be sure to get a good deal on them!!:)

Do you have a jean brand that you love?!

Smoothie Recipe

I've been under the weather the last couple of days so this morning, I decided to start my day with a healthy and nutritious smoothie. They're such an easy way to get your fruits and veggies in!

Smoothie tips-

*Using frozen bananas usually eliminates the need for ice. It also adds a nice creamy texture. I personally LOVE bananas so I almost always throw one into my smoothies.

*Kale or spinach? I've found that I prefer kale. It gives a smoothie a thicker consistency than spinach does. I buy it frozen from Trader Joe's (again it helps to eliminate the need for ice).

Smoothie recipe:
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 cup frozen kale
- 1/3 cup mixed berries
- 1/3 cup pineapple
- 1 tbsp flax seed (Add on top after serving. It's adds the perfect crunch!)

Do you have any smoothie recipes? I'd love to hear them!

There's something I should be doing more of

This blog post was inspired by Not Before my Tea's Blog Reader Appreciation Series  :)

I definitely know what it is I should be doing more of...reading for leisure. Whenever I read a book review or maybe see someone Instagram a book that looks interesting, I look it up. If I like the reviews I go ahead and take a snap shot of the book and add it to my book wish list BUT I never actually get around to buying any of them. Now that i'm living the oh so fabulous post-grad life, I have plenty of free time right now to actually read for leisure. Anyways I'll stop rambling. I gathered up all of my snap shots and put this together:

The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You   The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun    The Alchemist    Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)

Bossypants (Enhanced Edition)       Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office: Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers     Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead     Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson

1. The Honest Life  / 2. The Happiness Project / 3. The Alchemist 4. Is everyone hanging out without me
5. Tina Fey Bossypants / 6. Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office / 7. Lean In / 8. Tuesdays With Morrie

If you're looking for a new book, feel free to look any of these up. I'm starting with number 2. Hope you find something you like!! Do you have any book recommendations?

Number 9- Blog About a Date

I'm going to blame all of those Sex and the City reruns I watched over summer for influencing me to want to channel my inner Carrie Bradshaw. Carrie has some big (and cute) shoes to fill. Had I actually written this over summer...well I'm not really sure what I would have said about one of the dates I went on SO I guess the cool thing about finally updating my blog months later is I can add a little more introspect :) I think the greatest lesson I've learned within the last couple of months is you can't see dating as a waste of time. As annoying & exhausting as dating can be, it helps you figure out what it is you ultimately want in a serious relationship, you learn a great deal about yourself and you grow from it. I'm not saying go out and become a serial dater. I'm just saying don't be afraid to put yourself out there a little. You can benefit a lot from it. What are your thoughts on dating?

Well this is the end of my summer bucket list blog posts. I completed 7/10 not too shabby.

Peace & Love,
